Public health services in the City of AI are provided in partnership with the AI County Department of Health and the Maine Center for Disease Control and Prevention.

Outdoor burning is prohibited except permitted recreational fires in approved fire pits, agricultural burning permitted by the Maine Forest Service, and ceremonial fires by permit from the Permit Central Fire Prevention division.
Motor vehicles shall not idle for more than 5 consecutive minutes within the City of AI, except for safety, refrigeration, or in temperatures below 32°F or above 85°F.
The Department of Emergency Management coordinates response and recovery for any local emergency declared by the Mayor.
The Mayor, or the City Manager in the Mayor's absence, may declare a local state of emergency. The declaration expires after 7 days unless ratified by Council.
After three non-emergency lift-assistance calls to the same address within a 12-month period, a fee of $150 per call may be assessed to defray service costs.
Persons whose negligent operation of a motor vehicle while under the influence causes a city emergency response shall be liable for reasonable costs of the response.
Costs of emergency response to a second or subsequent hazardous material release by the same responsible party at the same location may be recovered as a civil debt.
Mobile food units operating in the City of AI shall hold a Maine state license, a city business license, and the local Mobile Food Vendor endorsement.
Vending is permitted in commercial and mixed-use zones, on private property with the owner's written consent, and in designated public spaces by reservation.
Each food establishment shall have at least one supervisor on each shift who holds a current Certified Food Protection Manager credential.
Caterers operating from a commissary kitchen shall be licensed by the Maine Department of Agriculture, Conservation and Forestry.
Food establishments are inspected by the Permit Central Public Health Inspection Unit at intervals based on risk classification. Inspection reports are public and posted to the open data portal.
Establishments posing imminent public health risk may be ordered closed pending correction; closure orders are reviewable by hearing within 72 hours.
Trash bins, recycling bins, and donation drop-off boxes on private property visible from the right-of-way shall be screened or located outside front yards except on collection day.
Every occupied residential and commercial property within the City of AI shall maintain garbage collection service from Public Utilities or a licensed private hauler.
Illegal dumping of garbage, construction debris, electronic waste, or hazardous materials on public or private property is a Class C civil violation punishable by a fine of up to $5,000 plus cleanup costs.
Medical wastes shall be handled and disposed in accordance with 22 M.R.S. § 1316 et seq. and the Maine DEP rules; placement in residential or commercial trash is prohibited.
Public and semi-public swimming pools are inspected annually by Permit Central. Operators shall maintain water quality logs and lifeguard certifications.
Smoking and vaping are prohibited in all enclosed public places, within 25 feet of building entries, in city parks, on public beaches, on city transit, and in any motor vehicle in which a child under 18 is a passenger.
Tobacco retailers shall be licensed by the city and the Maine Department of Health and Human Services.
Tattoo, body piercing, and electrology establishments shall be licensed by the Maine Department of Health and Human Services and shall hold a local business license.
The sale, possession, and use of consumer fireworks within the City of AI are prohibited, notwithstanding state allowances. Permitted commercial displays by licensed pyrotechnicians under Permit Central permit are excepted.
