Overview
Emergency Management coordinates hazard prep, response, and recovery for the City of AI in partnership with AI County Emergency Management Agency, MEMA, and FEMA Region I. The department staffs the Emergency Operations Center and runs the Alert AI City notification system.
Preparing for hazards
The City of AI plans against three primary hazards:
- Coastal storms and flooding — King tides, nor'easters, and named storms can flood Saltgrass Flats and Lantern Wharf. Check the FEMA flood map for your address on the data portal.
- Winter storms and outages — Plan for heat loss of up to 72 hours. Keep a warm kit, flashlight, and battery radio.
- Wildfire smoke — Air quality alerts trigger automatic shelter activation and N95 distribution at the Hopper Library.
Warming and cooling shelters
Shelters open when the heat index exceeds 95°F or wind chill drops below 0°F, or at the Mayor's discretion for any health emergency. Locations:
- Hopper Library — Community Room, 14 Hopper Plaza (open 24/7 during shelter activation)
- Foundry Common Rec Center, 22 Foundry Common (8 a.m. – 10 p.m.)
- Pinegrove Meeting House, 410 Birchpoint Lane (8 a.m. – 10 p.m.)
- Mount Aviary Senior Center, 902 Beacon Loop (8 a.m. – 6 p.m.; priority for seniors and medical needs)
