General Provisions

§ 6.04.010 — Animal control authority [City of AI, ME]

Animal control services are provided by AI County Animal Services under contract with the City of AI.

Cruelty to animals is prohibited consistent with 7 M.R.S. § 4011 et seq.

Rabid Animals

§ 6.08.010 — Confinement [City of AI, ME]

Any dog or cat suspected of rabies shall be impounded and observed for ten days. Confirmed rabid animals shall be euthanized in accordance with state law.

Dogs—General Provisions

§ 6.12.010 — Leash requirement [City of AI, ME]

Dogs in any public place shall be on a leash not exceeding 6 feet, except in designated off-leash areas (see Parks and Recreation).

§ 6.12.020 — Waste removal [City of AI, ME]

An owner shall promptly remove and dispose of dog waste from public and private property.

§ 6.12.030 — Barking [City of AI, ME]

Habitual barking that disturbs the peace of neighbors is a nuisance under Chapter 9.44.

Dogs—Licenses and Tags

§ 6.16.010 — License required [City of AI, ME]

All dogs 6 months or older kept within the City of AI shall be licensed annually with the City Clerk on or before January 31.

§ 6.16.020 — License fee [City of AI, ME]

Annual license fee is $11 for spayed/neutered dogs and $25 for unaltered dogs. Income-qualified owners may receive a fee waiver.

§ 6.16.030 — Rabies vaccination proof [City of AI, ME]

License application shall be accompanied by current rabies vaccination certificate.

Dogs—Impoundment

§ 6.20.010 — Impoundment [City of AI, ME]

Dogs found at large, without license, or otherwise in violation of this title may be impounded at the AI County Animal Services shelter.

§ 6.20.020 — Redemption [City of AI, ME]

Impounded dogs may be redeemed by owners upon payment of impound fee, daily board, and current license fee.

Dangerous Animals

§ 6.22.010 — Designation [City of AI, ME]

An animal may be declared dangerous after notice and hearing if it has, unprovoked, bitten or attacked a person or domestic animal, or has demonstrated propensity to attack.

§ 6.22.020 — Requirements [City of AI, ME]

Owners of dangerous animals shall maintain liability insurance of $100,000, post conspicuous warning signs, and confine the animal in a secure enclosure or on a 4-foot leash with muzzle when in public.

Guard Dogs

§ 6.24.010 — Registration [City of AI, ME]

Commercial guard dogs shall be registered with Animal Services, with site plan showing enclosure.

Enforcement

§ 6.26.010 — Authority [City of AI, ME]

Animal Services officers, sworn peace officers, and Permit Central inspectors may enforce this title and may issue administrative citations under Chapter 1.14.
