Overview

Parks and Recreation maintains 510 parks, plazas, maker yards, and civic learning spaces across the City of AI's nine council districts, plus three indoor recreation centers and the Lovelace Aquatic Center.

Featured parks

Lovelace Park

Location: 400 Lovelace Way, North Tideline   Hours: 5:00 a.m. – 11:00 p.m.

62-acre flagship park with playgrounds, splash pad, two baseball diamonds, a 1.4-mile loop trail, and the Lovelace Aquatic Center.

Boole Garden

Location: 88 Selkirk Quay   Hours: 6:00 a.m. – 9:00 p.m.

Botanical garden with native Maine plant collection, pollinator meadow, and free guided tours Saturday at 10:00 a.m.

Liskov Riverwalk

Location: Saltgrass Lane to Cobble Mill Avenue   Hours: Open 24 hours, lit dusk to dawn

2.6-mile paved waterfront path along the city's tidal river, with kayak launches at Heron Bay and Pinegrove.

Diffie Park

Location: 1200 Beacon Loop   Hours: 6:00 a.m. – 10:00 p.m.

Hillside park with sledding meadow, basketball courts, and off-leash dog area (see below).

Recreation leagues and activities

  • Youth basketball — ages 6–17, registration opens September 1, season November – February
  • Adult coed soccer — spring and fall leagues, registration $65/season
  • Pickleball ladder — drop-in play Tuesday and Thursday evenings at the Foundry Common Rec Center
  • Senior wellness — tai chi, low-impact aerobics, and aqua-fit at Lovelace Aquatic Center, free for residents 60+
  • Maker yard workshops — woodworking, ceramics, electronics; sliding-scale fees

Lovelace Aquatic Center — open swim hours

  • Monday, Wednesday, Friday: 6:00 – 7:30 a.m. (lap), 12:00 – 1:30 p.m. (lap), 4:00 – 8:00 p.m. (open)
  • Tuesday, Thursday: 6:00 – 7:30 a.m. (lap), 4:00 – 8:00 p.m. (open), 8:00 – 9:00 p.m. (adult lap)
  • Saturday: 9:00 a.m. – 6:00 p.m. (open swim; family swim 1:00 – 3:00 p.m.)
  • Sunday: 11:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m. (open swim)

Off-leash dog hours

Designated off-leash areas are open year-round. Dogs must be licensed and current on rabies vaccination.

  • Diffie Park dog meadow: 6:00 – 9:00 a.m. and 4:00 – 8:00 p.m. daily
  • Granite Ridge ravine: open all hours of park operation
  • Heron Bay beach: 6:00 – 9:00 a.m. and 5:00 – 8:00 p.m., October 1 – April 30 only
  • Pinegrove North Loop: 6:00 – 8:00 a.m. and 6:00 – 9:00 p.m., daily
