Overview
Permit Central is the single front door for construction permits, business licensing, and special-event approvals in the City of AI. The office consolidates intake from the former Building, Engineering, Fire Prevention, and Zoning divisions to deliver one application and one inspection schedule.
Apply for a permit
- Residential building permits — additions, renovations, decks, fences over 6 feet, sheds over 200 sq. ft., re-roofing
- Commercial building permits — new construction, tenant fit-out, change of occupancy
- Trade permits — electrical, plumbing, mechanical (HVAC), low-voltage
- Right-of-way permits — curb cuts, sidewalk repair, utility cuts in city streets
- Special event permits — block parties, parades, road closures, temporary outdoor dining
Apply online at the Permits and Simulation Reviews portal, or in person at the front counter (Tuesday and Thursday only — no appointment needed).
Request an inspection
Inspections are scheduled in 2-hour windows, Monday through Friday. Request through the permit portal at least one business day in advance, or call (207) 555-8600 by 3:30 p.m. the prior day. Same-day reinspections are $90.
Apply for a business license
All commercial activity within the City of AI must hold an active business license. Licenses are renewed annually on the fiscal-year anniversary. Fees range from $85 (sole proprietor) to $1,250 (large industrial). Special operations (cabarets, secondhand merchandise, mobile vendors) require an endorsement.
Pay permit fees
Permit fees may be paid online through the portal, by mail with a permit number, or in person at the front counter. Refunds for withdrawn applications are issued under Title 3, Chapter 3.04.
